Lava rocks, otherwise known as scoria, create an attractive base drainage layer in terrariums. The lava rocks are porous which helps to absorb water while providing drainage in your terrarium.

This bag of mixed colour lava rocks is especially versatile, as it can be used both as a base substrate for drainage as well as a decorative top layer for terrariums. Being porous, lava rocks are less weighty as a base layer than regular gravel, which can be useful when making larger terrariums.

This 500g bag will provide a base drainage layer for 2 x 20cm diameter fishbowl terrariums, or at least one 25cm diameter fishbowl terrarium. Shown here is one 500g bag of lava rocks in the base of a 25cm fishbowl terrarium.
