Tropical red springtails are a rare, non-jumping springtail from the Neanuridae family. Unlike the white, tropical springtails that are typically fast moving, these springtails are much slower. They appear to graze slowly and their bright, pink-red colour makes them a striking addition to tropical terrariums. They can be used in vivariums to help clean up enclosures as they feed on detritus, mould, mildew and decaying plant matter. They also make a great ‘companion’ species for isopods.

How to use tropical red springtails:
These tropical red springtails have been bred by us here at Botanista, and have been raised on a diet of fish food and nutritional yeast. Each tub of tropical red springtails is filled with clean coco peat which allows you to transfer the peat directly into a terrarium. Just spoon in springtails and coco peat directly from the tub.
What’s in the tub:
Tropical red springtails are shipped in small tubs, with a healthy population of at least 30 springtails. Your tub will contain a mix of adult and juvenile springtails. Please note that juveniles can be difficult to see. It is quite likely that your tub also contains as yet unhatched eggs.
Storage and care of tropical red springtails:
Tropical red springtails are not harmed by shipping and can stay in their tubs for a short time before transferring to a terrarium or larger enclosure. If they are kept in a tub, please ensure they have a source of food and that their container is opened once or twice weekly to allow for air exchange. Each tub comes with a small bag of food so that you can keep your springtail population healthy for an extended period should you not be using them immediately. Add a small pinch of food (fish pellets and nutritional yeast) to the tub – feed again only when the food has disappeared. Make sure to keep your springtail tub out of direct sun and in a dry place not subject to intense temperature changes.
Ideally, these springtails should be transferred to a warm, humid terrarium or enclosure indoors. While they can survive on natural detritus in terrariums, to keep your population reproducing well, top up their food occasionally by giving a pinch of fish food.
Springtails are not a pest but as they are shipped in coco peat, they cannot be sent to soil quarantine states including WA, TAS and NT.
